Soul Flowing

Just as a deer pants for the place where water springs forth,
there is within each of us a soul that pants for something
only the presence of God can satisfy.
— Psalm 42:1
"Soul Flowing"
Soul Flowing
is a simple spiritual reflection process
that helps you notice what is within you, bring it before God,
and discern your next step with peace.

Our inner companions—
our soul breathed into us by God,
and our emotions, thoughts, and desires shaped by our neurons and hormones — remain with us throughout our lives till we die.
Let us gently make space
for these friends of ours
as we walk this spiritual journey.

Take a slow breath.

But the deer in Psalm 42 did not arrive at the stream composed — it arrived panting. If your heart is still heavy, you are in the right place. There is no need to perform or produce anything.

"Give me a candle of the spirit, O God, as I go down into the depths of my own being."
This prayer asks God to bring hidden memories and forgotten wounds into the light, and to grant the freedom to grow into the true self God first planted within.

Brother Lawrence, the 17th-century friar, wrote that the time of business did not differ for him from the time of prayer (Practice of the Presence of God). Pausing is not stopping activity. It is the brief lifting of the inner gaze over your working hands — that small lifting is itself the pause. It is possible even in the midst of panting.
Howard Thurman believed that within each of us is something waiting for our own honest confession to rise to the surface. Pausing is making room — even briefly — for that sound to be heard. He said the deepest tragedy of our time is to live without ever hearing it above the noise.

Sue Pickering held that simply naming our feelings honestly is, in itself, already a form of holy prayer. When we remain in vague phrasing such as "I feel bad," we drift further from both ourselves and God. The more precise the naming — anger or grief, fear or shame — the more room is opened for God to enter that exact place.
Howard Thurman noted that when we express even our own feelings only in the language others taught us, we can end up conveying something entirely different from what our soul actually means to say. Set aside, for a moment, the censor that whispers, "A faithful person wouldn't feel this." Honest description is not a shame — it is among the most truthful offerings we can bring before God.

Abba Anthony, the 4th-century desert father, is remembered for telling his disciple to stay in his cell, for the cell would teach him everything. "Staying" is not the helplessness of inactivity but the courage of not fleeing one's own place. Linger a moment longer in that place, so that the feeling itself can speak to you.
Thomas Keating, within the tradition of Centering Prayer, taught that we should face difficult emotions directly rather than skirt around them. The most common impulse during "staying" is the urge to make this feeling disappear quickly. Notice that impulse, but do not follow it — a difficult feeling is not a closed door but an open one. We need only stand before it for a while.

Going deeper — The first move of the Welcoming Prayer
Thomas Keating, within the Welcoming Prayer, taught that an undiscriminating welcome — greeting whatever arrives without exception — lies at the center of prayer. No transformation begins without this first gesture. Welcoming is not agreeing that the feeling is right — it is giving it a place. Only when given a place can the feeling move toward where it can be transformed.
In the Spiritual Exercises' "First Principle and Foundation," Ignatius taught that we ought not, for their own sake, prefer health to sickness, wealth to poverty, or honour to dishonour. Acceptance is neither resignation nor approval. In Ignatian terms, it is the posture of indifference — standing at the centre of the scale before tilting either way. Only within this inner freedom does true discernment become possible.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
Niebuhr's prayer goes on to trust that, facing each day as it is together with our Savior, even hardship can become a path toward peace. Facing the world not as we wish it to be but as it is, and trusting that all things will be set right when we surrender to God's will — that is the ultimate peace this prayer seeks.

Brother Lawrence said there was no need of art or science — it was enough simply to speak to God as one would to a most loving friend. What most often blocks us at the threshold of invitation is the search for "proper" prayer-words. Lay aside every form, and speak as you are. Awkward, halting words can be the truest prayer.
Barry and Connolly observed that what deserves the spotlight in prayer is not our own words, but God's invitation. The Invite step is not only our calling out to God; perhaps more deeply, it is the pause that lets God's already-spoken call become audible. Asking what we sense in God's heart is precisely this second part.

In his teaching on the discernment of spirits, Ignatius held that what comes from God carries with it the texture of peace, of inner freedom, of a deepening love. A loud voice, a sense of pressure, a feeling shoved forward by fear is not the voice of God. Watch instead for the gentle yet persistent voice, which both keeps you in peace and moves you toward a wider love. These three signs go together.
Janet Ruffing taught that the way the Transcendent answers us deserves to exceed our imagination. Do not draw the criteria for "hearing an answer" too narrowly. A landscape rising in the mind, a remembered word from your mother, a Scripture passage weighting itself in your chest — each can be a response. Trusting this "texture of symbol" is part of mature discernment.

Discerning consolation and desolation
In his Rules for the Discernment of Spirits (Rule 5), Ignatius taught that in time of desolation, one should never make a change. Desolation is the texture that pulls toward darkness, dryness, isolation. Major decisions made in such a state are almost always misguided. The wisdom of discernment is to hold the decision in suspension until consolation flows again.
이 결의 차이를 분별하기 위한 2가지 질문 — *이것이 나를 더 자유롭게 하는가, 더 묶이게 하는가?* *이것이 나를 사랑으로 이끄는가, 두려움으로 이끄는가?*According to Ignatius's marks of consolation, consolation is every increase of faith, hope, and love, and every interior movement that draws the soul toward its Creator. "Feeling good" is not yet consolation. True consolation may pass through pain but draws you toward deeper peace, wider love, nearer to God. Two questions help: Does this make me more free, or more bound? Does it lead me toward love, or toward fear?
Sue Pickering said that a true call is never coercive, yet it is always steadfast. The texture of pressure ("you must decide right now") differs from peaceful discernment. A true call grows clearer with time and ripens within peace. Compulsion narrows and grows louder.

Going deeper — Where gratitude stands
In the Ignatian tradition of the Examen, gratitude is regarded not as the closing gesture but as the next movement — the posture that grounds every act of discernment. Gratitude is not a polite reply but a turning of vision. When we count what we have received, the self-centred gaze loosens and we begin to see where God has already been at work. Discernment finds its accuracy only on that turned vision.
Brother Lawrence held that whatever we do, large or small, we do for God, and in God — gratitude is what makes that possible. Timothy Gallagher taught that the Examen is not a solitary exercise of self-focus, but a conversation wholly devoted to God. When reviewing your day, do not simply fill out a checklist of rights and wrongs. The core of reflection is noticing where God was present and how you responded to His invitation of love.
For Ignatius, to pay attention to the movements of thoughts and emotions within oneself was the beginning of spiritual discernment. Emotions are antennas sensing God's presence. Trace the moments of consolation that brought joy, and the moments of desolation that caused restlessness or sadness.
Confess your shortcomings and receive His comfort.
Bring your vulnerabilities, dark thoughts, or hurts caused to others before the Lord and ask for forgiveness. Trust in His unconditional forgiveness and love, responding in prayer and reconciliation.
당신을 위한 기도A prayer for you 자비를 구하는 기도A Prayer for Mercy
Merciful Lord, I confess my weakness, my dark thoughts, and my failing to love others in my words and actions today. Forgive me, shelter me, wash me in Your love, and make me new. Amen.

Henri Nouwen believed that the wounds of the soul cannot be healed apart from God's forgiveness. Confessing our faults is not to receive condemnation. It is an act of honesty, exposing our wounds to a merciful Father, and seeking the peace of healing and forgiveness.
James Martin said that we forgive and reconcile not to erase the past, but to redeem it. Pray that today's hurts and shame are transformed into instruments of reconciliation under His grace. God's mercy is far greater than the memory of our failures.
Entrust tomorrow into God's hands.
Look forward to tomorrow and ask for God's help and grace. Entrust tomorrow's situations, worries, or burdens to Him, welcoming new peace in hope.
당신을 위한 기도A prayer for you 전적 의탁의 기도A Prayer of Surrender
Trusting in You alone, I surrender tomorrow into Your hands. Relieve my anxieties, let me look forward to Your upcoming grace, and welcome the new day in faith. Amen.

As a saying long carried in the Ignatian tradition puts it, we may work as though everything depended on us, while trusting as though everything depended on God. Rather than worrying about tomorrow's situations, resolve to walk through them with the Lord. Our peace rests not in our plans, but in God's infinite goodness.
Naming Your Feeling
This is a guide based on the 8 primary emotions proposed by Plutchik. If you tap “Scripture” on the right side of a primary emotion, related "Scripture for Meditation" will appear. Further to the right, if you click the “>” symbol, the sub-emotions of each primary emotion will be displayed. When you tap the emotions that apply to you, they are automatically recorded in the “Description” section.
Indifference)Indifference: Inner Freedom
What is indifference? Not apathy or detachment from caring. It is a state of inner freedom in which we do not desire health over illness, wealth over poverty, honour over dishonour, or a long life over a short one — for their own sake. Like a scale perfectly balanced at its centre, indifference means we are free from disordered attachments so that we can move whichever way God's will inclines us.
Self-check: where am I right now?
Five practical steps
Rather than dwelling in vague anxiety, name the specific decision — a vocation, a role, a possession — and hold it consciously in mind.
Ask God to bring you to a state of indifference — equally inclined toward neither option. This prayer is necessary even when it goes against our felt desires.
Using reason rather than emotion, examine the benefits and dangers of each option through the lens of God's glory and the salvation of your soul.
Follow where reason inclines, not where feeling pulls. Not suppressing emotion, but distinguishing it clearly from reason.
After the choice is made, bring it before God in prayer and ask that He receive and confirm it, if it is truly for His service and glory.

Contemplative Practices
If the eight steps of Soul Flowing are the daily spine, these five practices are companions that deepen the same texture. Open them whenever you need — for an evening review, in the midst of a difficult feeling, or while your hands are at work.
The Examen — Five Movements at Day's End St. Ignatius of Loyola · Spiritual Exercises
Ignatius said that of all spiritual practices, the Examen alone was "never to be omitted." It is a five-step retracing of the day — fifteen minutes is usually enough — looking for where God was already at work.
Pause; let your breath settle; make room for the One who is already here.
Review the day with gratitude — 크고 작은 은혜의 자리들을 헤아립니다. Count the gifts of the day, large and small. They need not be grand — a warm sip, a phone call, a moment of sun.
Pay attention to the day's movements — 어디에서 위로(consolation)를 느꼈습니까? Where did consolation rise — that movement toward life, faith, hope, love? Where did desolation deepen — toward darkness, restlessness, isolation? Notice the difference, gently.
Choose one feature and pray from it — 감사든, 후회든, 새로운 깨달음이든 — 한 가지 경험을 마음에 두고 그것을 주님께 가지고 나아갑니다. Take one moment — gratitude, regret, fresh insight — and bring it to God in honest conversation.
Ask for the grace of the day to come — to see more deeply, to respond more freely.
The Welcoming Prayer — When a Hard Feeling Rises Thomas Keating · Centring Prayer tradition
When anger, grief, fear, or shame rises — instead of pushing it away or analysing it, we welcome it. Welcoming is not agreement. It is the small movement of opening that place to God.
Notice where this feeling lives in your body now — chest, shoulders, throat, gut. Sink into the sensation rather than pushing it away.
Inwardly — or in a low voice — say: "Welcome. Welcome. Welcome." Make a place for the feeling that has come.
Name the three deep cravings Keating identified, and let each go. "I let go of my desire for safety and security. I let go of my desire for esteem and approval. I let go of my desire to change this situation — even if nothing changes."
Thomas Keating · Cistercian tradition
A wordless prayer in which we offer our consent to God's presence and action within. Not to acquire anything — only to make room.
A short word — Jesus, Love, Presence, Peace, Abba. The word is not its meaning, but a symbol of your consent.
Sit comfortably and gently close the eyes — 등을 곧게 펴되 긴장하지 않습니다. Spine upright but unstrained. Begin with a single breath.
When you notice a thought, return ever so gently to the sacred word — 생각과 다투지 않습니다. Do not wrestle with the thought. Do not analyse the feeling. Simply — gently — return to the word. A hundred times if need be.
Beginners may start with ten. Use a gentle bell to mark the end.
Rest a moment in silence before rising — 곧장 일어서지 않습니다. Do not rise immediately. Stay one or two breaths more. End with a brief prayer such as the Lord's Prayer.
Practice of the Presence — Every Hour is the Place Brother Lawrence · 17th-century Carmelite
Brother Lawrence is remembered for saying that the time of business did not differ for him from the time of prayer — he possessed God in as great tranquility at his kitchen work as if he were on his knees before the altar.
Brother Lawrence spent his life as a lay brother in a monastery kitchen. The practice he teaches asks for no special time or posture — every hour is already the place.
Over your working hands, your walking feet, your steering wheel — turn the inner gaze toward God for one moment. Not long — a breath, a word is enough.
Brother Lawrence held that we ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God. What you do matters less than the texture in which you do it.
When you notice you forgot, do not scold yourself — 로렌스 형제는, 잊었음을 깨달았을 때 부끄러워 말고 간단하게 잘못을 고백한 후 — 다정하게 — 다시 돌아가라고 했습니다. Lawrence taught that when we notice we have forgotten, we need only confess it to God in a few words and return — gently and without trouble. The returning itself is the practice.
Barry & Connolly, Ruffing, Pickering · Spiritual Direction tradition
Spiritual direction is not teaching but listening together. Five small postures for discerning the movements that rise within yourself — or within the pilgrim walking with you.
- 움직임에 귀 기울이기Listen for the movement — 위로(consolation)가 일어나는가, 실의(desolation)가 깊어지는가. Is consolation rising — toward life, faith, love? Or is desolation deepening — toward darkness, restlessness, isolation? Their textures are not the same.
As Pickering reminds us, resistance often marks the most important place. Dryness need not be read only as failure.
Do not manufacture an answer; remain until something is heard — 베리와 코놀리가 그린 동행자의 모습은, 길을 일러 주는 안내자가 아니라 함께 듣는 자리에 조용히 머무는 사람입니다. Barry and Connolly describe the companion not as one who points the way, but as one who quietly remains in the listening place alongside.
As Ruffing teaches, the answer often comes not as proposition but as image, dream, poem, or memory. Trusting that texture is part of discernment.
Trust the slow work of God — 창조주께서는 결코 서둘러 이 세상과 당신을 지어내지 않으셨습니다. The Creator has never rushed the making of this world, or of you. All the time it takes for a seed to become a tree, for winter to become spring — that waiting is already His way. Our impatience hurries toward answers, but the Creator's pace is slow, and faithful.
